Momentum Leadership Awards

Momentum’s Woman of Impact Award honors Alabama women leaders who do extraordinary work to positively impact lives of others in the community, business, culture or politics. The award is presented every other year in conjunction with Momentum’s biennial leadership conference.

We are pleased to announced the 2018 honorees for the Woman of Impact Award:

Gail Andrews served as R. Hugh Daniel Director of the Birmingham Museum of Art from 1996 until 2017. Upon her retirement in 2017, she was named Director Emerita of the Birmingham Museum of Art. A passionate believer in the transformative role of museums in the cultural life of the community, Gail is actively involved in a variety of arts and educational organizations locally, regionally, and nationally.

 

Regina M. Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A. was appointed by President Barack Obama as the 18th United States Surgeon General in July, 2009 and served a four-year term. She is the recipient of 22 honorary degrees and currently serves patients at the rural health clinic she founded in the small town of Bayou La Batre, Alabama.

 

 

Jane Stephens Comer is founder and president of GirlSpring, Inc. Through the years, Comer has served and been influential on several board including the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham, the Alabama Ballet, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and Birmingham Museum of Art. In 2010, Gloria Steinem awarded Jane the Gloria Award for Women of Action & Vision.

 

 

Major General Lee Price Major General N. Lee S. Price is a senior executive with 40 years of experience in information technology/cyber system, global operations and logistics, leader development, problem solving, organizational change, government procurement, and program management. General Price was the first woman selected for General Officer while serving in Special Operations Command (2008), the first female promoted to General Officer for the Army’s Acquisition Corps (2008), the first woman to serve as an Army Program Executive Officer (2009), and the first female promoted to Major General for the Army’s Acquisition Corps (2012). Her many awards include the Combat Action Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit.

 

Barbara Royal, MA, CASE is the retired CEO of Momentum Women’s Leadership Program. Barbara served as Executive Director of Discovery Place and Discovery 2000 and developed the groundwork for McWane Science Center. She is a graduate of Leadership Birmingham and Leadership America and has served extensively on civic boards and endeavors.

 

 

Nena F. Sanders, Ph.D., RN, FAAN is Vice Provost, Samford University College of Health Sciences Ralph W. Beeson Dean and Professor, Ida Moffett School of Nursing. Nena is a transformational leader in healthcare and her impact is evidenced by innovations in nursing education and practice and the development of models of healthcare delivery.

 

 

 

Often the achievements of women go undocumented. Momentum strives to elevate the great women of our state by highlighting their achievements. These award honorees are truly distinguished women leaders who have a lifetime of accomplishments in the service of others. Congratulations to our 2018 honorees.
