Katie Barnes has most recently served as the Vice President, Cancer service line at Virginia Commonwealth University.   She led the cancer team to optimize clinic performance and engage stakeholders to quality optimization, resulting in 19% increased volume and doubling clinical trial accruals to over 200 patients where VCU Massey Cancer Center achieved Comprehensive cancer center designation January 2023 by the NCI.  Additionally, she led the construction of a new outpatient cancer center & concurrent Epic go-live in late 2021.  The new outpatient cancer center increased access in clinical infusion by 45% by doubling infusion chairs.  Additionally, increased access in radiation oncology by 30% by reducing treatment duration with increased technologies and increased number of treatment bays as well as building and opening of a new outpatient Cellular Immunotherapy clinic in 2023. 
Previously Katie served as the Administrator of The Ohio State University Wexner Center and James Cancer Hospital and Comprehensive Cancer Center where she worked to develop and grow the Oncology programs. Under her leadership, the Oncology program has gone through a culture change by developing a collaboration with the staff and helping to promote a culture of mutual respect and professionalism.  As a testimony of this change, she helped improve the faculty and staff satisfaction survey scores within the Oncology program and today a culture shift is clearly noticeable in the positive direction. In addition, she organized the Oncology priorities and helped ensure that our Oncology’s strategic plan is accomplished. Katie recruited over 50 physicians with less than 5% turnover.  Furthermore, she facilitated the implementation of a new physician compensation program where she was the champion for the research component to determine research allocation for clinical research across the enterprise.    Katie improved fiscal performance by 20.3% from FY18 to FY19, resulting in a $27 million dollar increase. FY20, increase of 12%.  With an overall expense reduction of 22% from FY18, reduction in FY19 of 14%, FY20 reduction of 17%.  In 2020, I developed a Phase 1 Clinical Trial program across all oncology service lines. 
Prior to OSU, she worked for OhioHealth and had administrative oversight of system service lines of Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine, Oncology, Orthopedics, Neurology/Neurosurgery, and pulmonology/critical care across thirteen hospitals. While in this role, she led in reduced locum tenants use from 62% to 14% with a saving of $2.8 million dollars. With an overall expense reduction of $9.8 million in FY 2017 and increase in $9.4 million in revenue.  That increase led to System EBITA performance from 17% to 25% EBITA. 
Katie has an MPA from Indiana University, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Georgia State University.  She is also a certified phlebotomist and certified physician coder.  She is also a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).  Katie is a volunteer with Delta Zeta Sorority.  Katie also started a non-profit 501c3 organization for K-12 tutoring, specializing in students with Dyslexia.  In her spare time, she enjoys working out and spending time with family.
