Empowering the Female Voice: Markita Williams

“From the moment we crossed paths, I sensed a special connection, a bond that transcended mere mentorship. She didn’t just impart knowledge; she shared experiences, insights, and invaluable life lessons that I will forever cherish.”

Markita Williams had this and much more to share about her recent experience in our Mentor Matching program. Before her most recent promotion with Urology Centers of Alabama, Markita sought guidance on the next steps to take in her career along with how to stay calm, cool, and collected under pressure. Her church pastor connected her with someone who recommended our mentoring program. Soon after, she was matched with Tacita Thompson whose support was instrumental in her growth as a leader.

“Her ability to see potential where others might see limitations has inspired me to reach for the stars and believe in my capabilities. She believed in me when I doubted myself, gently nudging me forward with words of encouragement and empowerment.”

As a self-proclaimed overachiever with a strong inner critic, Markita felt that she needed someone in her life to check in on her headspace, help her to evaluate what is most important, and avoid over-scheduling herself. She found this and so much more throughout her mentoring experience with Tacita. When it came time to make a career change, Markita leaned on Tacita’s guidance, and through her own faith, hard work, and passion, she landed a promotion.

In addition to our Mentor Matching program, Markita applied and was selected for our first cohort of Momentum Works. During the first session, facilitators Kathy Boswell and Tonya Allen engaged the class in a meaningful discussion on emotional intelligence where Markita learned about teamwork, how to better think outside of the box, and ways to make emotionally intelligent decisions. Using the knowledge, skills, and resources she has gained from Momentum Works, Markita has cultivated an efficient and empowering environment within her department. She even shared that she’s recreated a Momentum Works activity in her own workplace.

Markita’s biggest takeaway from her experience with both Momentum Works and Tacita’s mentorship is her realization that women can work together and build each other up.

“We have a voice,” she says. “There’s a stigma that there is too much drama and emotion when too many women are working together, but that’s not the case.”

Momentum’s Mentor Matching and Momentum Works programs are cost-free to participants and create a lasting impact in the lives of hundreds of women leaders each year. To learn more, sign up for our newsletters here.
