Huntsville Class Two alumna and Momentum board member Amy George spent 11 years as a television news reporter and anchor, most notably at WHNT-TV in Huntsville. She later pivoted to a career in development and now serves as Director of Community and Government Relations at Huntsville Hospital Foundation. Though TV news and development are vastly different industries, Amy believes the skills she gained as a journalist, such as multitasking and adaptability, have been invaluable in her current role.
Huntsville Hospital Foundation President Sarah Savage Jones, a member of Huntsville Class One, encouraged Amy to apply to Momentum. While Amy expected the program to strengthen her leadership skills in the workplace, she was surprised by how seamlessly those skills transferred to her personal life.
“As women, we’re leading in so many different ways. We’re leading in the workplace, we’re leading at home, some of us are leading by raising children, and then we’re volunteer leaders in our community. Momentum is such a holistic approach to leadership that really impacted every area of my life, not just what I do at work.”
Amy shared that her biggest takeaway was Momentum’s emphasis on understanding personal values as a leader. During her time in Momentum’s Huntsville Executive Class, she developed her “Three C’s”: Leading with Confidence, Courage, and Compassion. Amy believes that by staying true to her values and embracing her unique leadership abilities, she can lead more effectively.
Since graduating from the program, Amy has become a Momentum Member, contributing financially to support and expand Momentum’s mission of advancing women in leadership. She has witnessed firsthand the program’s impact and empowerment of women through her own experience and is committed to supporting other women through the same opportunities for growth and development.
“If you’re on the fence about joining Momentum, I truly believe it is an important investment, and you see the dividends pay off every day.”
In each Momentum program, participants are assigned to a co-mentoring group of three to five other participants who meet regularly outside of class. Amy is grateful for her co-mentoring group, which includes Jessica Hovis Smith, Angela Curry, and Jennefer Meyer.
“There is power being in a room of smart, successful female leaders and there is so much we can learn from each other. But when we narrow our focus in a smaller group, intentional relationships are formed. All of a sudden, you have a group of women in your corner who cheer you on, who listen and who help you work out solutions. I’m so grateful for the women in my group and for how we support each other! That support is invaluable.”
Our team is proud of Amy’s growth as a leader, thankful for her unwavering support of Momentum, and excited to see all that she continues to accomplish.
