Upward Leadership Spotlight: Maggie Bolin

by | Oct 18, 2024 | Early Career, General

Maggie Bolin, a two-time Momentum Alumna, cherishes her experiences in the inaugural Upward class and Birmingham Executive Class 20. She graduated from Auburn University with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Accountancy and has extensive experience in the field, including roles in financial reporting, internal and external audit, and finance. After 12 years at Vulcan Materials, a Fortune 500 company, she currently serves as Senior Manager of Financial Research and Reporting, solidifying her status as a powerhouse leader. She credits Momentum for the final push to achieve this role.

2012: Maggie’s First Experience with Momentum
In 2012, Maggie attended her first Momentum conference, inspiring her to become involved with Momentum.

“From that first conference on, I never passed up the opportunity to attend another Momentum event.”

2019: Upward Class One Begins
In 2019, Maggie’s dear friend, sponsor, and Birmingham Executive Class 14 Alumna, Carol Maxwell, encouraged her to apply for Upward. Maggie was in middle management at the time, leading a large team while preparing for the arrival of her second child. She aimed to expand her leadership skills and grow as a manager, but ultimately, the training that had the greatest impact on her was focused on achieving a work-life blend while navigating motherhood and work.

“I assumed that Momentum was strictly professional development but quickly learned that was not the case. I gained exactly what I needed at that time in my life– introspective, personal development.”

2022: Executive Class 20 Begins
Three years after graduating from Upward, Maggie felt ready for the executive program. Just before Class 20 began, she received a promotion to a new role at Vulcan, increasing her need for professional development. During the program, she gained the skills and confidence to continue her growth in this new role and particularly benefited from a negotiation session that ultimately helped her reach a significant career goal.

“Working in a male-dominated field, I feel as though Momentum has given me the confidence to “sit at the table”. I’m a much more confident leader now using the tools that I gained in Momentum.”

Maggie with members of her co-mentoring group

Maggie is especially grateful for the networking opportunities and the friendships that have come out of her experiences with Momentum. She felt especially close to her Momentum co-mentoring group who still gathers together over two years later.

Our team is thankful to have walked alongside Maggie these past several years as she has grown in her leadership skills, both in and out of the workplace. With two Momentum programs under her belt, we are confident that she will continue to impact her community and beyond.
