Black History Month: Recognizing the Labor, Leadership, and Legacy of Black Women

Black History Month is a time to recognize and honor the profound contributions of Black women and men throughout U.S. history. This year’s celebration theme, “African Americans and Labor,” shines a light on the undeniable impact of Black workers in shaping our nation. From the forced labor of enslaved Africans that built the foundation of America’s economy to the rise of Black Wall Street, a testament to Black excellence and entrepreneurship, labor has been central to both struggle and strength.

Although progress has been made in recognizing, fairly compensating, and including Black women in the workplace, significant disparities persist. In 2023, Black women earned 63.7 cents for every dollar earned by White men. In 2020, African American women accounted for just 10.4% of supervisors, 9.6% of managers, and 7.3% of executives
