Your Action Plan for the New Year: Lisa Schuck

by | Jan 22, 2024 | General, Work-Life Balance

The new year ushers in a fresh opportunity to set goals, reorient priorities, and invest in one’s personal development. In light of such resolutions, Momentum hosted a webinar with Lisa Schuck to learn how to turn these goals into realities and achieve success in 2024.

It can be difficult to bring a goal to fruition. Schuck described January 12 as “quitters day,” a day where New Year’s resolutions often find themselves abandoned a mere two weeks after their debut. For a goal to actually survive and thrive in the new year, she offered the following pieces of advice:

  • Create a vision behind all goals
  • Write goals down on paper
  • Break down large visions into quarterly goals and objectives
  • Develop visions that are appropriately risky and exciting

Once these goals are developed, Schuck emphasized a crucial question to ask: What has to be true? When motivation is waning, knowing what has to be true provides a metric by which to adjust goals and evaluate progress. This question provides the opportunity to evaluate what needs to occur in areas that may be ancillary to a specific objective, but vital for successfully accomplishing a larger vision.

Life is full of “beasts” that impair our ability to accomplish goals. Schuck discussed how the brain’s ability to think is hindered by reactivity, making time management an important aspect of managing priorities, objectives, and goals. She presented the Eisenhower time matrix as a technique that is useful for everyone. In this method, the matrix is used to aid in decision making by helping classify which tasks are both urgent and important. Once these tasks are completed, the matrix helps to delineate remaining items into categories that should be scheduled, delegated, or deleted.

It takes discipline and perseverance for a goal to survive “quitters day.” Therefore, it is important to never forget to celebrate success as we strive to make 2024 a year of unparalleled achievement, fulfillment, and growth.

A previous Momentum blog post titled “Getting Things Done” describes how accomplishing a task is facilitated by habits and practices that spur our productivity. Checking an item off of a to-do list involves time management, proper prioritization, and most importantly establishing goals or objectives that set the framework for what we wish to achieve.
